Leather industry is one of the oldest industries in the world. It is a global manufacturing sector for the production of raw, processed and finished materials that are used in making leather. The hides comprise the waste product of food industries. However, the animals that are used for hides are well taken care of and treated humanely, making them a renewable resource. The use of leather products can be traced back to thousands of years and even today, it is one of the most traded goods in the world market. The export value of hides and skins is more than $5 billion. China is the largest producer of leather in the world, accounting for about 25% of the global production.

There are numerous organizations that deal with the manufacture of leather goods. The high competition in the leather market makes it all the more important for an organization to adorn themselves with a certification that guarantees the end user about the quality of product and processes. As one of the most polluting industries, organizations dealing with leather products are also required to keep a check on their impact on the environment.

Following are the ISO standards that are applicable for leather industries:

  • ISO 9001 Certification: This standard guarantees that the processes involved in the production of leather as well as the end product are of optimum quality. By following this quality management system (QMS), the organization can guarantee the right way of preservation of slaughtered animal and efficient beamhouse operations, tanning, neutralizing, withering, and sorting.
  • ISO 14001 certification: As mentioned above, the leather industry is one of the largest contributors to pollution in the world. Hence, they have to deal with much stringent environmental regulations. An ISO 14001 certification helps in implementing an Environmental management system (EMS) that acts as a proof of their compliance to such regulations.
  • ISO 45001: Workers of leather manufacturing organizations face common health risks due to poor maintenance of work are, poor lighting, inhalation of raw dust and chemical mist produced by alkalis and sulphides, various skin ailments due to chemicals, and infection from raw hides and skin. With the right implementation of occupational health and safety management systems (OHSMS) through ISO 45001 certification, such incidences can be minimalized or even checked.
  • ISO 50001 certification: This standard helps in establishing an effective energy management system in an organization (EnMS). Since this industry is water-intensive, the carbon footprint is also really high. With an effective EnMS, an organization can minimize its emission and manage its energy usage.

It must be noted that the International Organization for Standardization does not certify, it just publishes the ISO standards. An external body performs the certification.
